Caffeine Alternatives For Addicts

April 5, 2017

I wanted to share with you something that happened the other day that really rocked my world.

Actually, that's a bit dramatic, but the other day I had my quarterly check-up with my Naturopathic doctor getting routine blood work and making sure all is well.

What I didn’t expect and what ended up happening is what you would call, “getting checked.”

I consider myself an extremely healthy person, making sure I take all of my vitamins and minerals daily, habitual habits that I don’t even have to think twice about, and I just DO. Almost on autopilot.

But we all have our vices, am I right?

And because coffee is natural, I justify having 9 cups a day.

Just kidding, I only have 6.

Kidding again, only 3 (final answer) but I know that’s pushing it.

Now, I preach moderation in all things but I sometimes don’t listen to my own advice at times. I’ve actually gone weeks without caffeine and I feel great, so coffee is something I drink for pleasure, not because I actually “need” it.

However…..she put me in my place and consciously I knew I needed it.

Here’s the thing with coaching: Even though I know what to do and I, I need someone to put me in my place and get me back on course. We all do.

Accountability of sorts, and in my case making sure my blood pressure doesn’t get too wild because I can’t put the cup down. Seriously ladies, it's gotten to be a problem.

And even if you may be an expert in your craft, you still sometimes need a little wake-up call to give you a reality check and I needed it that day.

SO….

Below are some alternative recipes for coffee that will give you the energy you need and are extremely nutritious and delicious for you. I wanted to share these in case you are also in CA (Caffeinaholic Anonymous, not California)

Caffeine Free Latte

  • 1 cup unsweetened nut milk (almond or coconut)

  • 1 tbsp cacoa powder (high in magnesium and antioxidants)

  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (balances blood sugar)

  • 1 tsp maca powder (hormonal balancer)

  • Dash of cayenne powder (omit if you do not like spicy food)

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

  • Stevia drops (as much as you’d like)

  • Heat in a small sauce pan and blend with an immersion blender or put into a shaker cup after heated and shake until well blended.

Adrenal Cocktail

You can take this one of two ways: in the morning after your or in the middle of the day when you need a little pick me up.

  • 1/3 - 1/2 cup organic orange juice

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (organic and unrefined)

  • 1 scoop Vanilla Pea Protein (I use Nutrasumma brand)

  • ¼ cup organic coconut milk (the type in the can)

  • Stevia is optional to make it sweeter

  • Blend in a blender and drink after you’ve eaten your breakfast.

  • Do not be afraid of the sugar in the orange juice as it’s minimal and the coconut oil slows the absorption.

Old Fashioned Hot Cocoa

  • 1-2 tbsp raw cacoa powder

  • 1 cup hot water (or warmed unsweetened almond milk)

  • Stevia drops to taste

  • Boil the water or heat almond milk and stir in. Note: this will not work with cold water as the chocolate will not mix well

Teas

  • Organic green tea

  • Organic Chai or black tea(does contain small amounts of caffeine)

  • Organic Dandelion Root tea

  • Organic Ginger tea

  • Organic Rooibos tea(contains small amounts of caffeine)

  • Yogi Herbal Tea: Stress Relief

  • Yogi Herbal Tea: Healthy Skin

And dear coffee: I haven’t quit you, and I won’t. I’m just taking a little break from you.

Hopefully this helped some of you who know deep down that you have coffee problems (like my mom who reads these, hint hint) and are able to implement alternatives when you get the cravings.

And Ps: Limiting caffeine and taking breaks once in awhile also makes your hormones happy, so give it a try:)
